Angel Chinn



Angel Chinn, founder and artistic director of NonaLee dance Theatre studied at Morgan State University and The University of Maryland Baltimore County where she earned a BA in Dance and Performance. Angel also completed her Master’s degree of Fine Arts in Dance from Hollins University in summer 2020. She has performed around the metropolitan Washington DC area with Shange Dance Productions under the direction of Kutia Juwaru, 2006-2009 and The Baltimore Dance Project under the direction of Doug Hamby and Carol Hess 2007-2013. Upon moving to New York, Angel begin working with Delirious Dances in 2012 under the direction of Edisa Weeks.  Angel Chinn founded NonaLee Dance Theatre (NLDT) in May 2011. The Brooklyn based company strives to create socially conscious work that challenges, enlightens and entertains audiences through a movement experience.  The company presented its’ first evening length concert, Nuclear Quest in 2013 at Joe’s Movement Emporium in Mount Ranier, MD. With the support of the Community Arts Grant from the Brooklyn Arts Council in 2014, Angel created Awake, performed at Five Myles Art Gallery in Brooklyn, NY.  Awake is a spiritual exploration of the Kundalini through a meditation on the seven chakras of the body. In 2016, Angel was a part of the Featured Length Independent Choreographer’s Festival where she premiered Look Up at Irondale Center in Brooklyn, NY. Look Up focuses on technology and social media as the new form of brainwashing, as it has bombarded our lives and patterns of communication. In February 2017, Look up was also presented by the Atlas Intersections Festival in Washington DC and independently produced at Brooklyn Arts Exchange in May of the same year. In 2019, Dopamine Dreams was created which explored the complex history of cannabis in America through movement, text, and video. In addition to her work with NLDT, Angel has worked with director Charles Burks to choreograph for original musical theatre productions, To Catch A Fox, 2019,  What Now? Now What? 2017, and The Taming of the Shrew 2016, at City College of NY. Angel has worked as an educator in the New York City Public Schools since 2013 and under Nonalee Dance Theatre, directed a summer dance intensive from 2013-2015.  She has been a dance educator for more than 10 years with the aim towards cultivating creative, independent thinking and humility through the art of dance. As a performer, Angel has worked with choreographers Shani Collins-Achille,   Lindsey Dietz Marchent, Kathleen Fisher, Mark Dendy, Candace Franklin, Nathan Trice, Joya Powell, Adia Whitaker, and Edisa Weeks.
